Created by Rock Paper Build and Davey McEathron Architecture, the E 12th ADU is a case study for what happens when a husband (architect) and wife (builder) team up to create a highly detailed/customized community of 2 houses and 2 ADUs in the vibrant East Austin neighborhood of Chestnut. The ADUs both face the alley providing a sense of separation from the houses, while allowing for comradery between them. The East 12th ADU design utilizes vaulted ceilings, floor to ceiling glass and bright white walls to give the spaces a sense of grandeur and airiness. The custom grain-matched white oak cabinets in the kitchen serve as a warm and sophisticated backdrop upon entry into the living room. The design-build team worked closely with the concrete supplier to develop a custom aggregate mix for the foundation that resembles a black and white terrazzo that balances with the rich black, soapstone countertops. For the primary bath, a custom tile was created in collaboration with Clay Imports and acts as a feature wall, while the countertop, backsplash, and sinks were all fabricated out of the same slab of soapstone for a one-of-a-kind custom vanity. The secondary bath was designed to be the playful bathroom, with a blue vanity cabinet and matching sconces that complement the colors in the graphic cement tile behind the tub. Outdoor spaces offer varying layers of privacy with an open front porch facing the alley, a semi-private porch off the kitchen wrapped in terracotta breeze blocks, and a private deck off the primary suite.
